Messi meets Fabrizio Romano: Doesn’t want to become a coach, often ‘criticized’ by his sons

Messi recently had a private interview with journalist Fabrizio Romano, a transfer information expert, for page 433 and broadcast on Apple TV channel, about his current life in the US, playing for Inter Miami, about MLS (American professional soccer league) and future plans.

“I don’t see myself becoming a coach.”

“To be honest, I don’t know. I see some friends who have become coaches, but I don’t think I want to be a coach, I don’t really know what I can do in that role,” Messi said when Fabrizio Romano asked about the next step in the Argentine’s career.

Regarding the 2026 World Cup, Messi explained: “The truth is that I don’t know either, I’ve been asked about this many times, especially when I was in Argentina. I hope to have the best end to the current season and then a better preparation period for the next season (2025).

This is something I didn’t have last season, because our team had to travel a lot around the world. From there, I’m waiting to see what happens, to see how I feel. In football, a lot of things always happen. There’s still a long way to go, so I don’t think too much about it. I’ll live day by day without thinking too much about the future.

“Inter Miami has entered the most important stage of the season. We celebrated with the championship (Supporters’ Shield) and broke the MLS points record. But we all know that the most important title of the season is the MLS Cup. During the year, we made many mistakes. When we are in the playoffs now, even the smallest mistakes will not be repeated, because it can cause us to be eliminated immediately. Therefore, we must become strong, determined to aim for the championship. In MLS, there are many competing teams, so everything is not easy,” Messi shared.

“In MLS, there is a lot of enthusiasm and passion. A lot of things that I never knew. I used to think that American fans only care about basketball, baseball and football. But I was really surprised when I saw with my own eyes that there are also many people who care about football. This is a very competitive league, the stadiums are always full of spectators, the fans are very passionate and support their teams with all their heart. So playing away is always not easy for any team,” Messi emphasized.

Celebrating in “superhero” style, still criticized by sons

According to Messi, he celebrated in the style of “superheroes” in the Marvel cinematic universe because of his sons.

“Yes, we used to watch a lot of these movies together, the kids always asked for a different hero for each goal,” Messi revealed. “If there was a superhero character like Messi, what superpower would you want?”, Fabrizio Romano asked. “Invisibility or flight. But invisibility is better (laughs),” Messi replied.

Messi also said: “My sons often criticize me when watching one of the matches. They also often give me advice before each match. Normally, I play football with my sons at home. It depends on the moment to give advice to which of the three, because one is more hot-tempered than the other two. Before each match, I usually just listen to music, drink mate tea (a popular drink in Argentina) with close friends and talk via video call with my sons.”

Messi also admitted: “My biggest dream was to win the World Cup. I achieved that with the Argentina team. I was also lucky enough to win everything with FC Barcelona. I have a wonderful life and family. Therefore, I am completely satisfied and enjoy every day like this. I don’t know how the fans will remember me, but let everyone remember me the way they want.”
