Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo has surpassed the one billion followers mark across his social media accounts, thanks to his newly launched YouTube channel attracting more than 60 million subscribers in just over three weeks, according to Reuters.

Ronaldo, who scored his 900th career goal last week to help Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in the Nations League, is the first person to reach one billion followers on social media, the global media coverage.

This year, Cristiano Ronaldo topped Forbes’ list of highest-paid athletes, with off-field earnings of $60 million last year, thanks to his large social media following.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said: “The best is still ahead, and we will continue to work hard, win and make history together.”

Not only did Ronaldo surpass Lionel Messi, who has 623 million followers on social networks, he also surpassed many other big names in the entertainment industry such as Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, or the world’s leading YouTuber MrBeast, who has 543 million followers in total.
